Blizzard has announced the upcoming Public Test Realm (PTR) for Diablo IV, scheduled from May 27 to June 3. Season 9 will bring exciting changes. Players can create their own spells. There will be layered dungeon challenges. A new Asteroth boss fight will also be introduced.
Horadric Spells Are All About Customization
This new system allows you to create your own magic. Start by selecting a spell type, such as missile, nova, or pulse. Then, mix in modifiers that shape its behavior, traits, and effects.
The goal is flexibility. Do you want a durable orb that slows and damages enemies? You can create that. Prefer a burst that protects allies and pushes back foes? That’s an option as well.
It’s the most modular system Diablo IV has introduced so far. If it clicks, it could replace seasonal powers entirely in future seasons.

Nightmare Dungeons Evolve
Three major updates are coming to endgame dungeons:
- Strongrooms
These are hidden vaults that appear mid-run. Inside, you’ll face a miniboss challenge. Beat it and you earn Attunement, a buff that upgrades your final loot chest. Optional tests add risk and boost rewards. You decide how far to push it. - Dungeon Chains
You’ll be able to link up to three Nightmare Dungeons in one go using a new type of sigil. Each segment increases in difficulty and reward.
The final phase includes a boss fight against Asteroth Reignited, a remixed version of the campaign villain. - Affix Updates
Blizzard is simplifying affixes to reduce frustration. Some positive affixes now have rarities, making them more desirable to target farm. And yes, you can finally teleport between dungeons directly without leaving the instance.
More system details are covered in Blizzard’s Full Patch Breakdown on their official site.

Asteroth as a Trial Boss
The campaign villain will make a comeback in a new form tailored for chained Nightmare runs. This iteration of Asteroth is a prototype, as Blizzard explores fresh concepts for endgame campaign bosses. They aim to innovate while maintaining the integrity of existing systems.
Small Fixes with Big Impact
Visual clutter will be toned down, especially in party play and spell-heavy builds. Starting at World Tier 4, you’ll begin to find Strongroom Sigils. You can also earn seasonal currency from Whispers and Helltides without having to repeat activities.
