Chrono Odyssey is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most ambitious MMORPGs. In the latest developer interview, we got a closer look at what makes it special. We also checked if it is ready to meet high expectations.
No More Main Quest Chains
Chrono Odyssey breaks away from the usual linear storytelling. Players have the freedom to choose their own path, leveling up through exploration, combat, crafting, or engaging in small-group activities. While early quests offer some guidance, players quickly gain the freedom to upgrade their gear and make choices right from the beginning, without the need to grind through a required campaign.

Soulslike Combat That Matters
Combat relies on skill and quick reactions. Key elements include dodging, parrying, and managing stamina. This game doesn’t reward mindless button-mashing. Every action matters. Each weapon class offers a unique experience. For instance, the saber is a swift, katana-style blade. Switching between weapons is seamless and intuitive. If you appreciate combat that emphasizes precision and timing, you’ll likely enjoy this game. Crafting and Life Skills Are Core
Crafting and gathering are vital components of the game. To upgrade your gear and weapons, you’ll need specific materials. The process is simple: visit a town workbench, collect the necessary items, and create your equipment. The game features distinct tiers, stats, and progression paths. While there are healing and tank classes, you have the freedom to customize your build. You’re not confined to rigid roles, and playing solo is always a viable option.
Seamless Open World
Chrono Odyssey features a vast, interconnected world without any loading screens. As you explore, you’ll encounter other players along the way. The game embraces themes of cosmic horror and dark fantasy. You’ll find rewards for exploration through Chronogates, bounty hunts, and time-based portals. Your actions shape the evolving world around you.

PvP Exists, Just Not the Focus
The main emphasis is on PvE, but PvP is also included. Players can opt into PvP, much like in World of Warcraft. Additionally, there are hints of PvEvP systems and more player-versus-player content to come. While PvP isn’t the primary focus, it certainly plays a significant role.
Designed Around Small Groups
Chrono Odyssey emphasizes solo play and smaller groups rather than large raids or massive PvP battles. Most content is designed for teams of 3 to 5 players. Expedition dungeons offer challenging, tactical encounters that prioritize player skill over sheer strength. While the developers classify it as a full MMORPG, the core experience is tailored for smaller teams, allowing you to encounter many other players in the world.
So What’s the Verdict?
Chrono Odyssey is taking daring steps by breaking away from the traditional MMO formula. It provides players with freedom, precise combat, and a seamless world. It’s too early to say if it will fully achieve its big goals. However, it has already shown that it is more than just another theme park MMO.
The playtest will launch on Steam in June 2025. Stay tuned for updates!
